Blake McGee received his bachelors of music at the University of Minnesota and his M.M. and D.M.A. in clarinet performance at the University of Oregon. He performs as a member of the Portland Opera, Oregon Mozart Players, and the Vancouver Washington Symphony. Additionally, he is a founding member of the northwest new-music group, the Definiens Chamber Players. Beginning in the Fall of 2010, Dr. McGee will join the faculty of the University of Wyoming School of Music.
As an avid reed-maker for nearly a decade, Dr. McGee has worked extensively to develop new quantitative methods for examining the physical characteristics of clarinet reeds. His DMA thesis, An Examination of Commercial Clarinet Reed Properties with Regard to Design and Materials, was an extensive study of 15 commercial reed brands. In 2009, he presented his findings at the International Clarinet Associations conference in Portugal, where he was awarded honorable mention in the research competition.
